Insulated vs Non-insulated glass

Insulated glass roofs or domes consist of two or more glass panes with a vacuum, or any other gas, filled between them. On the other hand, we have non-insulated glass roofs and domes which have a single pane in its structure.

Insulated glass roofs and domes are more expensive compared to the non-insulated ones.

Glass cover classification:

  • GU – Glass unit.
  • IGU – Insulated glass unit.
  • TGU – Triple glass unist.

Glass dome panels are always installed in a downwards slope. The glass is trailed to prevent it from bending due to wind, snow and its weight. Also known as toughened or safety glass, tempered glass is highly suitable for external walls, facades, roofs. Because of a quick-cooling manufacturing process, the glass is highly durable and resilient to impact, making it less likely to shatter upon breakage. In an insulated glass unit, all layers of the glass are tempered.

Glass panels for a glass dome are usually triangular, rhomboid, trapezoidal, pentagonal or hexagonal. More rarely a rectangle shape. Another type of glass panels are called Figura. Due to the more complicated production process, a lot of manual work, the amount of scraps, figurative glass products are significantly more expensive than rectangles.


Glass options

Glass panels are multilayer composites. There is a wide variety of combinations of glass panels with different characteristics, chemical coatings, lamination films, frames, sealants is very wide. Float glass has specific properties in terms of color, transparency, emissivity, strength, pressure resistance, heat resistance, chemical resistance, accoustic, fireproof class.

On custom request, special glass product configurations are available: electrically heated, Smart for privacy, fireproof, anti-vandal, bulletproof, non-slip (suitable for walking).

Electrically heated glass. The most frequently used layers of heated glass are in  IGU and TGU products. Heated glass can be automatically controlled with temperature sensors, or adjusted manually. Heated paths on the glass surface, are formed with the help of a laser, and are so thin that they are not visible.

The exterior heating layer is designed to melt snow and ice. Mostly used in countries where there is snowfall.

The interior heating layer is designed to remove condensate when used in SPA areas, swimming pools, botanical gardens. It’s also used to create a comfort environment in high-end restaurants and hotels, where customers can be seated near a glass wall during winter and not feel the cold draft. If it’s + 20C indoors and -5C outdoors, the inner surface of the glass will be around + 12C to + 16C depending on the thermal resistance of the glass product. Internal heated glass does not replace a heating system, but only complements it.

Curved and covered glass. We design and manufacture curved glass products for special projects. The glass can be bent in 1 or 2 directions. GU, IGU, TGU can be bent. Curved glass cannot be tempered, therefore it’s not as resistant to loads as flat tempered glass.

Glass products are connected in two ways – via structural siliconization or a cap clamp. Structural siliconization is most suitable for domes.
The glass units are mounted on an aluminum profile system, that collects condensate from the glass connective joints.
Opening windows

Triangular or other shaped openable windows for ventilation or smoke extraction. Windows can be with a slight slope of 8 degrees. The window will protrude around 30 mm from the main facade. Openable windows are controlled automatically, (power supply 24 / 230V). Lifting weight is up to 100 kg.

Air ventilation system

In dome-shaped buildings and skylights, unlike flat roof structures, warm air is concentrated at the top of the dome. Therefore, it is necessary to foresee ventilation solutions when designing the dome. At the top of the dome, hot air moves slowly. As the outside temperature changes, moisture condensation forms on the inner surface of the glass. To prevent condensation on the glass surface, a scrubber and balanced extraction system must be installed.
